PRET-A-PORTER: BRINGING FRENCH FASHION TO AUSTRALIA With all the glamour of a Rue de la Paix salon, French fashion parades opened on 16 September 1946 in the grand ballroom of David Jones in Sydney. Women focked to these shows, which also toured to Finney Isles in Brisbane – eager to catch a glimpse of the stunning Parisienne mannequins and garments. The frenzy for French fashion in Australia reached its peak in July 1948 when the frst complete Dior collection ever to be shown outside Paris was displayed in department stores around Australia. This talk, with Sydney based dress historian Margot Riley, will explore the signifcant events in the history of fashion which brought these spectacular parades to Australia.
